Glumur Baldvinsson of IceAid meets Mr Adam O. Kimbisa
the Mayor of Dar es Salaam,Tanzania
|
Glúmur Baldvinsson, Director of IceAid - an Icelandic
Development and Humanitarian
Organisation - met Mr Adam O. Kimbisa the Mayor of Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania, today. At the meeting Mr Kimbisa wished IceAid welcome to
his
city and country and thanked the organisation for it´s commitment
to
helping the Tanzanian poorest of the poor.
He pledged his cooperation so that IceAid´s health care and pharmaceutical
project
would be a success and extended his thanks to Actavis Group, Atlantsskip,
Icelandair and the Icelandic people in general for making this assistance
possible.
The Mayor has put forth an ambitious micro credit loan scheme aimed
at
helping the poorest population of the City to get out of the poverty
trap.
The plan is similar to famous micro credit loan scheme which has proven
so
successful in Bangladesh.
Mr Kimbisa asked IceAid to assist in raising funds, soft loans and grants,
for this ambitious plan which is already in its initial stages.
Out of the 4 million people who live in Dar es Salaam 800 thousand,
or 20
percent of the population, live under extreme poverty, that is on a
dollar
a day or less.
The micro credit loan scheme envisages empowering the
poorest with tools to increase commercial activity based on a triangle
system whose main components are business parks, industrial parks and
financial parks. The financial parks are to provide credit (soft loans)
for the small businesses and and industrial parks (home industries under
one roof) to thrive and grow. Mr Kimbisa would deeply appreciate the
help
of Icelandic businesses and/or the Government to fund the project.
